About morphine

Morphine is named after the Greek god of dreams and slumber, Morpheus, and the reason to name it like this is because this medicine acts as a sleep inducer that mitigates the pain in patients with terminal cancer the same way an analgesic does.

Morphine is extracted from opium, reason why it can cause dependency. However, WHO includes morphine as part of the treatment to alleviate pain during cancer and affirms that morphine doesn't cause dependency when it is utilized as part of this treatment.

Nevertheless, morphine is also used by the army to alleviate the pain of the soldiers injured in battle, and we must emphasize that when it is considered that saving the life of a soldier is impossible, doctors inject a great amount of morphine to grant the soldier a painless death. This might sound like a Hollywood-film-like scenario but it is a real and very common practice in war.

Morphine has the characteristic to require every time higher doses in order to achieve the desired effect. This is why it is common that the liver, kidneys, as well as some other organs of the respiratory apparatus become debilitated by their use. When the patient cannot support the pain, the doctor agrees to apply morphine in comply with the wishes of the patients and their family but this only accelerates their organism decay and eventually their death.

In countries without public health insurance, because the costs of the treatment are very high, the insurance companies provide the patient with morphine or its variants in sufficient doses so that the patient perishes in a period of 2 weeks to a month. This is something very well known in countries such as the United States.
